With the widespread deployment of Lithium-ion batteries to power numerous applications over the course of the last decade, three primary packaging technologies have evolved as the most prevalent in the Lithium-ion battery industry: Cylindrical, Prismatic, and Pouch-based.
The Role of Separator Films Within Lithium-Ion Battery Cells Each individual cell within a lithium-ion battery is made up of two electrodes – a positively charged cathode and a negatively charged anode – on opposite sides, a liquid electrolyte that carries lithium ions between the two, and a dielectric separator film (see Figure 1).
Lithium polymer batteries exclusively use prismatic cell packaging. Heavier gauge metals are a preferred material option for prismatic casings, as they alleviate the risk of bulging on internal pressure build up.
The coating thickness and weight must be uniform to ensure a longer-lasting and safer battery. (We previously wrote about this subject in The Importance of Film and Coating Measurement of Lithium-Ion Batteries.)
Battery packaging materials play a crucial role in the lithium-ion battery manufacturing process. Indeed, considerable cost savings can be achieved when an adequate combination of mechanical, permeation, and seal-strength properties is present in the selected packaging material.
