UPDATE: The semi solid-state battery range test streamed live by NIO's CEO is now complete. It took about 14 hours to cover 652.5 miles on a charge before the test was stopped with the pack at 3%.
While observing roughly the same Wh per mile consumption, the dyno test was able to achieve 882 miles of range—only a 17 percent difference over what they saw during their real world drive. The Gemini isn't some wild idea battery using unobtainum minerals, nor is it some unusual chemistry.
The team says its coin-sized test cell runs at about 685 Wh kg –1 and should be able to reach 1,200 Wh kg –1, four times what's achievable with lithium-ion now and roughly comparable with the energy density of petrol in cars. The experimental system works using a new chemistry that surprised even the team studying it.
