The most studied batteries of this type is the Zinc-air and Li-air battery. Other metals have been used, such as Mg and Al, but these are only known as primary cells, and so are beyond the scope of this article.
Secondary battery chemistries, distinct from primary batteries, are rechargeable systems where the electrochemical reactions are reversible. Unlike primary batteries that are typically single-use, secondary batteries, such as lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride, allow for repeated charging and discharging cycles.
