The optimization and impact of high solar reflectance and low thermal conductivity on the insulating capacity of walls remain uncertain. This work investigates the dynamic thermal performance and energy efficiency of a reflective and insulative composite coating in regions with hot summer and warm winter.
Zhang et al. developed a reflective heat insulation coating using a geopolymer, primarily composed of sodium silicate solutions and metakaolin, as the film-forming material. They incorporated sericite powder, talcum powder, titanium dioxide, and hollow glass microspheres as fillers.
The findings reveal that reflective coatings have the potential to reduce solar heat gain by about 40 %. This reduction can lead to a corresponding indoor temperature drop of 2–4°C in naturally ventilated buildings or a decrease in cooling energy use in air-conditioned buildings, provided the air conditioning system is not undersized.
This study suggests a simple spraying approach for producing thermal insulation coatings that are superhydrophobic. The coating is available in a range of colors with solar reflective and superhydrophobic capabilities, with a contact angle of 159.6° and a roll angle of 2.3°.
