Getting replacement cords can be expensive, but fortunately, you can fix most cords on your own for a fraction of the price. No matter how you plan on doing the repair, cut off the damaged portion first.
Installing a new plug is the simplest solution for most types of cords, including extension cords. However, for some accessory cords, you may not be able to find or install a matching plug. Try soldering instead. Take the plug with you to a home improvement store to help find a matching replacement.
If you see a lot of serious damage, you may be better off purchasing a new cord instead of attempting a repair. Note that broken extension cords cannot safely be spliced, or joined, back together. No matter how well you try to reconnect the old wires, the cord won't be safe for use. Instead, fit it with a new plug.
Get a replacement plug end from a hardware store. Most hardware stores will have replacement plugs in their electronics sections or near the extension cords. Make sure you match the new plug with the type of cord you have. Get a 3-pronged plug for a 3-pronged cord, and a 2-pronged plug for a 2-pronged cord.
Just cut the cord at the break, expose about an inch of cord on each side, twist the separate insides together, insulate from each other w/ e-tape, then wrap the whole mess with e-tape. - Your cord is breaking on the base-end of the strain-releif (as was the case for Surroundsound). Your fix will slightly differentiate from this Instructable.
