Solar panel prices are lower than they've ever been – but this could be about to change. The global cost of solar has dropped from 26 cents per watt in 2022 to just 11 cents per watt in the first three months of 2024, which is a rapid fall even for this industry.
Solar PV Module Costs are around 15% and Inverter costs 5%. Over time there has only been a slight fall in Balance of System Costs, Soft Costs and Inverter Costs. However, there's been a big fall in the cost of Solar PV Modules and that has driven the fall in the installed price of residential solar panel systems
Data from Berkley Lab's Tracking The Sun report (2023) shows that the price of solar PV modules has seen a 51% drop over the last decade. In 2013 the median cost of the solar PV modules used in residential systems was 0.99 $/W. In 2022 the median was 0.49 $/W. The cost of solar PV modules has dropped by a massive 90% since 2000.
The findings show that advances in hardware features made the largest contribution to the overall cost reduction of solar PVs. The reduction in the soft costs has also been primarily driven by hardware improvements: more practical system designs might speed up installation, reducing labour or permit costs.
The equations in the cost-change model provide a framework to account for the multi-faceted impact of different variables on overall system costs. Trancik and team then populated the equations with historical inflation-adjusted data to characterize the features leading to the change in costs for residential and utility-scale solar PV installations.
