Two capacitors C1 and C2 are connected to the neutral point of the inverter and serve as a voltage divider. For proper operation of the NPC inverter, the neutral point must be kept at one half of DC-link voltage by using a proper modulation strategy able to achieve voltage balancing between the capacitors.
The circuit scheme of a three-level three-phase neutral point clamped inverter (NPC) is shown in Figure 1, for both conventional and T-type configurations. It consists of a DC voltage source (Vs) with series RL impedance, representing either a simplified model of a real DC source or a DC filter (series reactor).
