The discussion about the production of lithium-ion battery cells in Germany has been given a new impetus by the announcement of state funding. After a long period of uncertainty, car manufacturers such as Volkswagen are now planning to embark on the large-scale production of lithium-ion batteries for the first time.
Germany is signing international agreements to secure the prized raw material while at the same time searching for lithium sources at home. Lithium is considered one of the key raw materials in the energy transition. Lithium is a soft metal and a key part of batteries for electric vehicles.
Two materials currently dominate the choice of cathode active materials for lithium-ion batteries: lithium iron phosphate (LFP), which is relatively inexpensive, and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) or nickel-cobalt-alumina (NCA), which are convincing on the market due to their higher energy density, i.e. their ability to store electrical energy.
Berlin (GTAI) - The refinery is expected to produce 20,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually – sufficient to supply around half a million electric vehicle batteries. This facility represents the first of five planned modules at the site, with the potential to expand the yearly capacity to 100,000 metric tons.
To achieve its breakthrough, Altech successfully used silicon particles that had been treated with its innovative proprietary technology to produce a lithium-ion battery electrode. When energised, these materials held 30% more capacity compared to a conventional graphite only anode material.
